Cold Brewed Iced Tea with Fruit

This fruit iced tea is one of the easiest and most refreshing drinks you can make for warm weather. It looks beautiful in jars, tastes light and delicious, and is perfect for keeping in the fridge all summer long. I often prepare several jars at once so I always have a ready-to-go drink for busy days, guests, or simply cooling down.

What Makes Cold Brew Iced Tea So Good

Cold brewed iced tea follows the same idea as cold brew coffee. Instead of using hot water, the tea slowly infuses in cold or room-temperature water. This creates a smoother, gentler flavor that is naturally low in bitterness and acidity.

Another advantage is convenience. There’s no need to boil water or handle hot pots, which makes the process simple and safe.

It also stays clear and visually appealing. Traditional hot-brewed iced tea can sometimes turn cloudy because of tannins reacting with heat. Cold brewing avoids this entirely, giving you a clean, transparent drink.

How to Prepare Basic Cold Brew Iced Tea

Making the base tea is very simple. Use about one tea bag for every 6 ounces of water at room temperature. Let it sit for about an hour first, then transfer it to the refrigerator and allow it to steep for 12 to 24 hours.

Once it has finished steeping, remove the tea bags. You can then sweeten it to your taste and serve it chilled.

I often like to add fruit during the steeping stage, which allows the flavors to blend naturally with the tea.

Flavor Combinations with Fruit and Herbs

There are many ways to customize your iced tea using fresh fruit, herbs, and even a mix of both.

A berry mint version works beautifully with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and fresh mint leaves.

A citrus and blueberry basil mix can include orange slices, lemon and lime pieces, blueberries, and a touch of basil for an herbal note.

For something more aromatic, try an orange berry thyme combination with oranges, strawberries, blueberries, and a sprig of thyme.

A peach melba variation pairs peach slices with raspberries and a hint of mint.

For a more refreshing and light option, cucumber and watermelon with basil creates a very cooling summer blend.

How to Add Sweetness to Cold Brew Tea

Since sugar does not dissolve well in cold liquids, it is better to avoid using regular granulated sugar directly.

A simple syrup is the easiest solution, as it blends smoothly into cold drinks. Another option is to mix honey with a small amount of warm water until it dissolves, then use it as a natural sweetener.

Both methods allow you to adjust the sweetness evenly without leaving grainy texture in the tea.

Helpful Tips for Better Results

Cold brewed tea often needs more tea bags than hot brewing to achieve a similar strength. For a small batch, using two tea bags for about 1.5 cups of water works well, and you can increase to three if you prefer a stronger flavor.

The initial hour of resting at room temperature helps kickstart the infusion process before refrigeration, so it is worth not skipping this step if possible.

Because cold brewing produces a smoother taste, it may initially seem weaker, but the flavor becomes more noticeable once you adjust to its lack of bitterness.

You can experiment with different types of tea, such as green tea, herbal blends, or flavored varieties. Loose leaf tea also works well if you strain it afterward before adding fruit.

Frozen fruit can also be used directly. It will thaw slowly in the fridge while the tea steeps, adding extra flavor.

Small glass jars are ideal for this method, especially for entertaining or travel. They seal well, are portable, and can be used as both container and drinking glass.

I usually keep several jars prepared in the fridge at all times. As soon as one is finished, I start a new batch so there is always another ready. Even if the tea steeps slightly longer than a day, it still tastes great. Sweetening can be done when removing the tea bags so the drink is ready whenever you want it.
